EPL Gameweek 38 Review: Premier League 2021/2022 | How it unfolded on final day!

The Premier League (PL) season came to a pulsating end as Manchester City and Liverpool went toe-to-toe for the grandest prize. 

Ultimately, it was the Sky Blues of Manchester, who captured the glory to clinch their sixth PL title. While there was joy and jubilation, some faced a harsh reality.

The Premier League Title Race

For the ninth time in PL history, the title race went to the final day. It was the third time that Man City and Liverpool took the race to the final day. 

While Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa made Liverpool a favour by taking a shock 2-0 lead, it was at Anfield where the Reds couldn't take the advantage as Wolves lead against them.

With 20 minutes to go on the final day, City were trailing and Liverpool were earning a point. But, that wasn't enough as City were still at the summit of the table. 

But then an inspired substitute Ilkay Gundogan turned the game on its head with two goals in five minutes. From 0-2 down City led 3-2 and Liverpool's comeback win of 3-1 became academic against Wolves. 

The breathing-taking finally saw Liverpool getting pipped by Man City to win the PL title, 10 years after they had won their first in 3-2 home win against QPR.

Spurs clinch final Champions League spot

Another race that went done to the wire was the Champions League (CL) spot for next season. 

Arsenal needed to win against Everton while only a Spurs defeat could have seen them leapfrog them. While needing a favour from Norwich, Arsenal needed to get the better of Everton.

Spurs though were in complete command of the situation and won emphatically 5-0 away at Carrow Road. 

A brace from Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski saw Spurs through to the fourth place. On the flip side, a 5-1 home win for Arsenal was only worthy enough of a fifth-place finish.

Leeds survive at Burnley's expense

At the wrong end of the table, both Leeds and Burnley were looking nervously above each other's shoulders. 

Leeds started the day in the bottom three, while Burnley were outside the relegation zone on goal difference. Burnely’s task was to match Leeds’ result on the final day.

Leeds though made sure they put enough pressure on Burnley and were thrown a lifeline when opposition Brentford were reduced to nine men. 

Jack Harrison made sure of the points as Leeds ran out 2-1 winners in West London, while a Maxwell Cornet goal wasn’t enough for Burnely as they lost to Newcastle 1-2 at Turf Moore. The defeat to Newcastle United saw Burnley’s six-year PL stay come to an end.
