In this year's World Cup, the team from the African nation had been giant killers, defeating Belgium, Spain, and Portugal and advancing to the semi-finals, where they stumbled at the last stage against France.

with the first meeting in the year 1996 during the 1996 King Hassan II International Cup Tournament. The tournament consisted of four teams, namely Morocco, Croatia, Nigeria, and the Czech Republic. The four teams played a couple of semi-finals, and the winners went on to play in the final. Henri Michel's Morocco team found themselves two goals down against Croatia within 15 minutes after a brace from Goran Vlaovic but managed to level the game courtesy of strikes from Salahedine Bassir and Ahmed Bahja.

With the score 2-2 at full time, the match went into the penalty shootout, and the Croatians edged their hosts 7-6 in the shootout before going on to be the inaugural winners of the competition after beating Euro 1996 runners-up the Czech Republic in the final.

2022

The teams met for the second time, this time in the 2022 World Cup's group stage, with both teams drawing the match. Despite Croatia having 61% possession, the two teams couldn't be separated, with both having an equal number of shots (five) and on target (1).
