Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the first player to score in five World Cups
The dream of winning the World Cup may have come to an excruciating end for Cristiano Ronaldo, but he still made the headlines for all the right reasons. When he scored against Ghana in the group stage, he became the first player on planet earth to score in five different FIFA World Cups. Ronaldo scored in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2018 editions, before his latest goal on the global stage.
Lionel Messi becomes the first player to assist in five World Cups
Lionel Messi was not sitting back when he came to the FIFA World Cup 2022 and was a ‘Man on a Mission.’ The Argentina skipper became the first man in the history of the FIFA World Cup to assist a goal in five editions. The Paris Saint-Germain man was seen at his fluent best during 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 showpieces and continued his exploits in the latest event as well. If things continue to march on he could also land the golden boot having been in scintillating form for the majority of the tournament with four goals.
Most appearances for a goalkeeper in World Cup history
Despite Germany’s exit in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2022, it was a silver lining on the dark cloud for Manuel Neuer as he now holds the record for most appearances by a goalkeeper in the final tournament. With 19 appearances so far, Germany’s skipper has been one of the legends of the game having won all the honors in the game including a FIFA World Cup in 2014 in Brazil when Germany beat Argentina in the final.
Stephanie Frappart- The first female to referee a World Cup match
Stéphanie Frappart of France became the first female referee to officiate in a men’s World Cup game after she took charge of Costa Rica vs Germany on Matchday 3 of the FIFA World Cup. It was a piece of history as never before had a female official taken charge of the men’s game on the global stage. The match would see Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2, but was not enough for them to book their berth in the Round of 16, and the latter also was dispatched at the same stage.
