FIFA World Cup 2022 | England vs France | last 5 Head-to-Head Meetings

Two of the biggest contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2022 will go head-to-head on Saturday (December 9) as England and France cross paths.

 The defending champions will face a stern challenge knowing Gareth Southgate’s side is yet to lose in the tournament. Fixtures down the years between the sides have been tense and Saturday’s encounter should be no exception as a place in the last four will be up for grabs. Ahead of the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal between the two European giants, here is a recap of their last five fixtures.

England vs France Head-to-Head

France 3-2 England, 13 Jun 2017, Stade de France, Paris

It has been five years since the two rivals met on the international stage which turned out to be a thriller. The encounter at the Stade de France saw England take an early lead through Harry Kane in the 9th minute. Samuel Umtiti then broke France's level before Djibril Sidibe put the hosts in the lead while Harry Kane then leveled the score with his second goal of the game in the 48th minute. In a frantic contest, a 78th-minute strike from Ousmane Dembéle settled the match as France ran out winners by 3-2.

England 2-0 France, 17 Nov 2015, Wembley Stadium

While preparations for the Euro 2016 were in full swing England faced France at Wembley stadium in November 2015. While the Three Lions were in a phase of transition, as youth and experience combined for Roy Hodgson’s men as they ran out winners by 2-0. Goals on either side of the half from Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney saw England triumph 2-0.

France 1-1 England, 11 Jun 2012, Donbass Arena, Donetsk

The last competitive meeting between the sides took place in the Euro 2012 as France and England went head-to-head at the Donbas Arena in Donetsk. England opened the scoring with a 30th-minute strike from Joleon Lescott as the Manchester City defender found space from a set piece. However, it took only nine minutes for France to find an equalizer as Lescott’s City teammate Samir Nasri leveled the scores and the match ended all square for the rest of the contest.

England 1-2 France, 17 Nov 2010, Wembley Stadium

Just months after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2010, England and France were getting ready for the new generation phase. Under the captaincy of Hugo Lloris, a young French side saw Karim Benzema open the scoring in the 16th minute which Mathieu Valbuena then doubled in the 55th minute. A late consolation from Peter Crouch for England saw the deposit gets reduced but did not salvage anything as France ran out winners by a score of 2-1.

France 1-0 England, 26 Mar 2008, Stade de France, Paris

While the preparations were underway for the Euro 2008 for France, England were recovering from the tragic period that had seen them miss out on Euro 2008 qualification. France were enjoying a golden period at that time, having only lost the final of the FIFA World Cup in 2006. The meeting in March 2008 saw the French side run out winners by 1-0 as Franck Ribery scored the only goal of the game through a penalty.
