Saul "Canelo" Alvarez: A Modern Day Boxing Great

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a modern-day great, even more so after being the first-ever Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion in the history of boxing.

Canelo’s resume is nothing short of amazing, he is someone who turned pro at the age of 15 and knocked out people twice his age.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez made it big after his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Where he would lose his first match ever as a professional boxer, which to this day is his only ever loss. Canelo went up to the light middleweight and won his first-ever World Championship Belt in professional boxing.

The loss against Mayweather seemed to have positive effects on the youngster as he only went on to get stronger.

Canelo is also one of the biggest names in World boxing, bringing in huge Pay per View numbers. He has generated over $600 million in PPV buys throughout his career with the biggest one being against Floyd Mayweather Jr. With so many buys, he’s made over $150 million throughout his career.

Fighting Style

Canelo Alvarez is a Mexican but his boxing style is a little different, even though he loves himself a war. Canelo’s power might be one of his biggest arsenals but he never relies on it solely.

The Mexican can throw good combinations mixed with counter punching. Canelo uses his elite head movement to make the opponent miss and for him to create an opening before launching a punch.

Standing at only 5’8 Canelo makes sure to use his body punches against tall opponents. He also uses his height well to duck and weave against his oppositions.

Canelo’s ring IQ is much underrated as he uses it to frustrate his opponent into falling into his traps and opening up. Canelo’s chin is also one of the best in the world of boxing, he has never even been knocked down in his 60 professional fights so far.

Professional Record

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has a professional record of 57-1-2, with his only loss coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr

Canelo has got a resume full of superstars with names such as Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Gennady Golovkin, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and many more. His most recent win was against Caleb Plant, who was an undefeated World Champion.

Out of the 57 wins, Canelo has knocked out 39 of his opponents, a devastating number for a middleweight fighter. The fact that Canelo is only 31 is mind-blowing, he might end up with 70 professional wins by the end of his career.

As of right now, no fighter could possibly beat the Mexican in his division. It is a fact, no one has got the skill or power to defeat the Mexican. Only Gennady Golovkin came close which ended in a controversial draw.

However, Canelo managed to put all the controversies to rest after he fought him a second time and defeated him convincingly.

Remarkable Achievements

  1. Only ever lost once in a World Title fight, against an all-time great like Floyd Mayweather
  2. Became a 4 division World Champion in 2019, after winning the Light-Heavyweight World Championship
  3. Became the first-ever Undisputed World Champion in the Super Middleweight division
  4. Joins only 5 other men who are undisputed champions with the 4 major belts
  5. Canelo has won 16 World Titles across 4 weight division

What’s next for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez?

For now, Canelo should be looking to rest for a while as he has been one of the most active World Champions. After winning all at Super-Middleweight division, Canelo can do whatever he wants.

He might be looking for a title shot in the 175 pound division once again, or he might go back down to middleweight and fight Gennady Golovkin for the third time.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez also has Jermall Charlo in his sight. With his kind of resume, we doubt Canelo is scared of any fighter in the world, it is the other way around.

Whatever it may be next for the Mexican, we know that Canelo has already done enough to be considered amongst the greats of boxing. He will only continue to improve his legacy and include his name with the likes of Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
