Serena Williams vs Venus Williams: Lexington Open Preview and Prediction

The legendary Williams sisters renew their rivalry tonight as they face off in the Lexington Open. Playing her first competitive match after six months, Serena Williams overcame compatriot, Bernarda Pera in three sets in the round of 32. 

The 23-time grand slam champion began sloppily losing the first set 6-4. She then drew level to win the second set 6-4. The deciding set was her best display of tennis as she used her attacking game to clinch it 6-1.

On the other hand, Venus Williams thrashed Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-2.

Despite the pandemic, Venus kept in touch with the game by participating in the World TeamTennis event. It was a ruthless performance as she won 70% of her first serve points and converted all her breakpoint opportunities.

Strengths of Serena

Her aggressive baseline game, consistent groundstrokes and ability to win long rallies are her biggest strengths. She has also improved her netplay massively. However, Serena needs to reduce her count of double faults. Her forehand needs to be consistent during the big moments. 

Strengths of Venus 

Having been on the tour for more than two decades, Venus's court coverage stands out on top. Her big serve helps her to rack up points quickly. A powerful backhand is another weapon in her artillery. She needs to improve her defense as it has not stood strong against the top players.

Having played close to 30 matches between each other, Serena leads the head to head record 18-12. Venus last defeated Serena in the Indian Wells Masters in 2018. 

While Serena remains the favourite, Venus should aim for a strong start to put Serena under pressure. The effectiveness of Venus's forehand and her approach to the net will determine her performance. The first set would be crucial for both the players as it will set the tone for the match.
