Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United: Key Stats Review

Manchester United created history last Sunday when they beat the hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers by a 1-0 margin. That result helped them to become the new record holder to maintain the unbeaten streak in the English football league away matches. 

Wolves had some great chances but they couldn’t break the deadlock, majorly due to the desperate attempts from the visitors’ defensive line. 

The first half ended with a goalless scoreline. In the 80th minute, Mason Greenwood finally scored the only goal of the match. 

Despite Paul Pogba’s challenge on Ruben Neves, the referee decided to continue the game while the PL debutant Raphaël Varane found Greenwood in the right. The English youngster pushed the ball into the box before his shot beat the home goalie José Sá.

• Wolves haven’t scored a goal yet in this PL season. Previously they had a similar goal-less experience in their first three matches of an English league season in 1978/79.

• Manchester United have created a new history in the English Football League. While it was their straight 28th unbeaten game in the PL away matches, it became the new record for the longest unbeaten away run in English Football League history. Their latest victory helped them to surpass the previous record of Arsenal’s 27-match unbeaten streak in the PL away games (between April 2003 and September 2004).
• While it was the 100th PL match for Ole Gunnar Solskjær as a Manchester United manager, it was their 53rd win. Solskjær became the ninth Red Devils manager to take the charge of the team in 100 matches in the English top-flight league competition. However, only Ernest Mangnall managed to achieve better match-winning records than Solskjær in the same time as the English recorded 54 victories.
