FIFA WC 2022 | Argentina vs Australia Preview & prediction | H2H Record | lineup
Two-time World Champions Argentina are all set to lock horns against Australia at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan with the winner heading to the quarterfinal.
Having secured their passage as Group winners, Lionel Messi and his side will target World Cup glory while Australia will look to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. With high stakes on offer, both Argentina and Australia will look to make their opportunity count.
Argentina vs Australia Head to Head
This will be the eighth meeting between the sides as Argentina will look to continue its traditional dominance. In seven previous meetings, the Socceroos’ only win against the South American giants came in their first meeting in July 1988 where they emerged victorious by a scoreline of 4-1. Since that win, it has been an utter dominance by Argentina on all fronts.
The pair’s last meeting came in 2007 in an International Friendly, where a Martín Demichelis goal saw Argentina win the contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Overall this will be the fourth time these two meet in a competitive match, having faced in the 1994 World Cup qualifying playoff, while also meeting in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup.

What happened in the group stage?
Argentina started their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign on a sorry note as they were desolated by Saudi Arabia by 2-1. The damaging defeat meant that Argentina had to win their next two games to avoid an exit from the competition. The two-time champions did the necessary in the consequent matches and beat Mexico 2-0, while they also got the better of Poland by the same score to book their place in the last 16 as Group C winners.
Over in Group D, Australia too started with a defeat against France but then took full advantage of minnows Tunisia and won the second group game by 1-0. Australia’s final group against Denmark saw them needing a point and were seen all guns blazing. The Danish side had no answer to the Australian team’s resistance and lost 1-0. The final-day win saw Australia progress to the R16 as Group D runners-up and make their second appearance in the knockout stage after 2006.
