The FIFA World Cup 2022 has reached the knockout stage as the big guns take the center stage in the form of France and Poland.
The defending champions broke the champion's jinx and became the first team in 16 years to play in the knockout stage after winning the previous edition. France who are tipped for supremacy will now look to regain their title while stepping in their way are Poland who will stage a World Cup knockout game for the first time in 36 years.

That same year also saw Poland get the better of France in their only World Cup meeting as they won 3-2 in a pulsating battle. However, France’s recent dominance should see them clinch the battle as the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud are in top form.

What happened in the group stage?
France suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Tunisia in their final game of the group stage but will now look to regain momentum. The champions started with a 4-1 win over Australia in the first week and followed that with a win against Denmark. A brace from Mbappe saw Denmark lose a tight contest that ultimately was the difference-maker.
Poland too suffered a defeat in their last group match, but Mexico’s inability to find another goal against Saudi Arabia saw them finish second on goal difference. Despite the defeat, Poland ended their 36-year knockout stage drought and will take guard against France. Earlier they had beaten, Saudi Arabia and held Mexico to a goalless draw.
