FIFA WC 2022 | Netherlands vs USA Preview & prediction | H2H | lineup
USMNT face the Netherlands in their last 16 group match at Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar. USMNT who placed second in group B faces the Dutch who finished first in group A.
The winner, will advance to the next round and face the winner of the Argentina (Group C first place) vs Australia (Group D second place) clash occurring on Saturday.
USA
The USMNT sought a win against Iran to avoid early elimination in Qatar. A first-half goal from Christian Pulisic delivered a 1-0 result which was enough to knock out Iran. But now, USMNT sweat over Pulisic injury concern, as the Chelsea player attack injured his lower abdomen in the run of play.
The USMNT will be going as dark horses, going against the Dutch. But they can boast confidence of outplaying England, another European powerhouse in their second match in the group stage, holding them to a 0-0 draw. Their midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, and Weston McKennie are at the top of the game.
The Netherlands
The Netherlands is among the favorites in Qatar, and not just because of their No. 8 place in the FIFA World Rankings. They have a history of finishing as runner-up in three prior World Cups (1974, 1978, and 2010) and winning the 1988 Euros.
The Netherlands have star power in the form of FC Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, an early Golden Boot candidate: PSV striker Cody Gakpo has scored three times. Other stars include Liverpool center-back Virgil van Dijk, Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries, and FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong– some of Europe’s top players at their position.
Netherlands vs USA Head-to-Head stats
The two teams have locked horns five times thus far with all the meetings being friendly games. All games have produced conclusive results, with four wins for the Netherlands and just one win for the USA.
The USA recorded a 4-3 win when the two teams last met in 2015. Three of these five games have produced fewer than 2.5 goals.
The Netherlands were cruising at 3-1 up after a Huntelaar brace and a goal from Memphis Depay — who will likely play in the Dutch team on Saturday, making Gyasi Zardes' first-half strike irrelevant.
However, John Brooks netted with 20 minutes to go before Danny Williams scored to earn a draw with two minutes of time remaining. Bobby Wood popped up to win it for the visitors in the 90th minute.
The Netherlands will be looking to attack in numbers, they pose a great technique, and Louis Van Gaal has turned the Dutch side into a well-drilled side.
