UEFA and CONMEBOL agreed that every Euro and Copa America winner would play an intercontinental match. 

The trophy has been recognised as a major prize which will count as an international trophy. The deal will take effect in 2022 when the previous year’s Copa America champion Argentina and Euro winner Italy playoff in the Finalissima at Wembley Stadium.

The Azzurri were the Champions of Europe, overcoming England in penalty shootouts. But eight months later their hopes of World Cup qualification were derailed after they finished second in the table, which means they had to play playoffs to secure a place in the 2022 World Cup. 

However, they came short against North Macedonia and were eliminated from the World Cup play-off after a shock 1-0 defeat. But the Azzurri will have another opportunity to make amends by winning the Finalissima against Argentina.

The La Albiceleste beat Brazil 1-0 to clinch the Copa America title, their first major title since  1993. It was Lionel Messi’s first major title with his national side, since then they are now undefeated in 31 games and are poised to win another championship. 

Messi and the company will be motivated to win another trophy with the national team squad.
