Premier League duo get a boost in chase for La Liga defender Nelson Semedo
A host of Premier League clubs have been placed on high-alert after FC Barcelona full-back Nelson Semedo's talks with the Catalan giants have reportedly stalled. The 26-year-old right-back has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and more recently Manchester City as speculation mounts over the future of the Portuguese international.
Reports in Spain claim that an exit from the Camp Nou could be edging closer for the former SL Benfica defender after negotiations over an extension to his current deal have broken down. It is claimed that the reason behind the breakdown in contract talks is Semedo's demand for guaranteed playing time.
Semedo is under contract until June 2022, but is hesitant to pen fresh terms with the Blaugrana, having struggled for playing time behind Sergi Roberto. Despite the fact that he is not an automatic first-choice, he has still featured 29 times for the Catalans this term.
In fact, Semedo has made a total of 111 appearances since joining the club from Benfica in 2017. FC Barcelona want to tie him down until 2024, but they are having difficulties persuading him.
Jorge Mendes, his agent, has also recently suggested a move to England could be on the cards. He hinted his client could be used as part of a swap deal with Manchester City for Joao Cancelo, who is also one of his clients.
Both the Portuguese internationals are right-backs and both have struggled for game time at their respective clubs.
Cancelo made his mega-move to Manchester City last summer in a player plus cash deal that saw Danilo moving the other way round. But, he has not enjoyed his first season at Etihad at all as he has found himself playing second fiddle to Kyle Walker.
Spurs, meanwhile, also have struggled at right-back since they parted ways with Kieran Trippier and have been monitoring the situation of Semedo for quite some time now.
