Premier League hopes to end season with 'home and away' fixtures

Home and away games could be back on the agenda for the Premier League after opposition to its plan to finish the season at neutral venues. The Premier League is now hoping for the season to be completed with games played home and away, rather than at neutral venues, if the campaign resumes next month.

Since the league was suspended in March, the Premier League is still committed to finishing the season, with all 20 clubs behind playing the remaining games. The bottom six clubs, however, have objected plans to do so at neutral venues because they feel it would put the clubs fighting relegation at a competitive disadvantage.

In a recent meeting, the British government published its plans for exiting lockdown on Monday, when the Premier League also held a virtual meeting regarding its Project Restart plans. The Premier League chief executive Richard Masters opened up about the fact that the league understands the clubs who wish to play games home and away rather than on neutral grounds.

He said, “Everybody would prefer home and away if at all possible. It’s clear to see that some clubs feel more strongly about that than others. It is an ongoing dialogue and we’ve been talking to the authorities about the conditions in which we could get the Premier League back up and running and taking all that advice on board.”

“No decisions will be made until after we have talked to players and managers and those meetings are rescheduled for later this week.” However, he did confirm that the final plan is still to finish the season and any discussion about the curtailment of the season was avoided. It was recently announced that the Premier League is all set to return from June 1, hoping the functions are carried out smoothly without any concerns.
